Few words on why this spicy tofu curry list on top among my absolute favorites is

Are you looking to add an alluring meaty curry that adds a touch of flavor to your plant-based meals? Look no further than this enticing spicy tofu curry from Sri Lanka. This delectable dish combines the heat of handmade freshly ground spices with the creamy texture of coconut milk, creating a flavor explosion that will leave my taste buds craving more every time I make it.

Cooking up some amazing plant-based protein dishes is a must have in my weekly meal planing tasks, when I am on plant-based meals. My blog already includes a variety of plant protein dishes ranging from beans, soya chunks or plant-based meat alternatives to browse from. In addition to others, this Sri Lankan spicy tofu curry, with enough time for tofu chunks to absorb flavors from spices, encapsulates those savory aromatic notes into very delicate creamy saucy goodness. The tofu remains soft and a supple flavor bomb, perfect accompaniment to the steamed rice, giving a festive feel to everyday plant-based curry with my favorite seafood curry flavors.

Sri Lankan spicy tofu curry

My recipe of spicy tofu curry is not only influenced by authentic Sri Lankan meat curry recipes, but also by other flavorful tofu dishes around the world.

Plain tofu on its own can be bland and there are multiple ways of remedying that and making tofu dishes that are going to be sought after delights.

Making sushi rolls, deep frying and air frying seasoned tofu chunks are some of the most popular and effortless ways to go about making spicy non saucy or curried tofu dishes. Having tofu with thick flavored sauce or a flavor oil is one of my favorite ways from the world table of tofu dishes. Just like Mapo tofu, Sri Lankan spicy tofu curry packs tons of heat and flavor.

  1. Mapo tofu: A renowned Sichuan dish, Mapo tofu features soft tofu cubes cooked in a fiery combination of minced pork, chili bean paste, and Sichuan peppercorns. It offers a unique blend of flavors, and is often enjoyed with steamed rice.
  2. Tofu Pad Thai: A flavorful Thai stir-fry dish, tofu Pad Thai combines rice noodles, tofu, bean sprouts, and crushed peanuts in a tangy tamarind sauce. It’s a delightful balance of sweet, sour, and savory flavors.
  3. Sundubu Jjigae: A popular Korean tofu stew, Sundubu Jjigae presents silky tofu, vegetables, and sometimes seafood or meat, all simmered in a spicy broth. It’s often served with a bowl of rice and various banchan (side dishes).
  4. Inari Sushi: A traditional Japanese dish, Inari Sushi involves pockets of deep-fried tofu filled with seasoned sushi rice. These bite-sized sushi pockets are slightly sweet and make for a delightful snack or addition to a sushi platter.
  5. Mapo Doufu: A classic Chinese dish, Mapo Doufu features cubes of tofu cooked in a spicy sauce made with doubanjiang (fermented broad bean paste), minced meat, and Sichuan peppers. It’s commonly enjoyed with steamed rice.
  6. Tahu Goreng: A popular Indonesian street food, Tahu Goreng is deep-fried tofu that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It’s often served with a peanut sauce and accompanied by fresh vegetables or rice cakes.

These are just a few examples of the diverse and delicious tofu dishes enjoyed across Asia.

Europe and America also boast a variety of popular tofu dishes that cater to different palates and culinary preferences. In Europe, one noteworthy tofu creation is the Greek-inspired spanakopita with tofu. This savory pastry combines spinach, feta cheese, and tofu as a delicious plant-based alternative to the traditional recipe.

I can recall more than a few of my friends, who are avid barbecue enthusiasts and can make a mean grilled tofu skewer, marinated in a smoky and tangy barbecue sauce, whenever we get together. Tofu scramble is another favorite among my plant-based breakfasts, a fine vegan twist on classic scrambled eggs. In addition, tofu-based desserts like chocolate mousse and cheesecake have gained popularity as delectable plant-based treats. These tofu dishes from the world highlight the versatility of tofu dishes and how we use this humble food to cater to a wide range of tastes and dietary preferences.

My top tips of cooking a fine Sri Lankan spicy tofu curry

Marinating for spicy tofu curry in bowl with marinaded tofu cubes onions chilies and curry making herbs

When it comes to cooking tofu, mastering a few key techniques can elevate your culinary creations to new heights. To start, ensure that you properly prepare the tofu by draining and pressing it to remove excess moisture. This step allows the tofu to absorb flavors more effectively and achieve a desirable texture when cooked. Additionally, marinating the tofu for at least 30 minutes before cooking adds depth and complexity to its taste profile. Experiment with different combinations of soy sauce, vinegar, spices, and herbs to create unique and flavorful marinades. When it’s time to cook, use high heat and a nonstick pan or grill to achieve a crispy and golden exterior.

Avoid overcrowding the pan to allow the tofu to brown evenly. Gentle flipping or stirring during cooking helps maintain its shape while evenly distributing the flavors. Finally, remember to taste and adjust the seasoning as needed before serving. By following these best practices, you’ll unlock the full potential of tofu in your culinary creations, delighting your palate and those of your guests.

Furthermore, tofu is widely considered an important plant-based protein….

Tofu plays a crucial role as a protein source for plant-based diets, offering numerous benefits that make it invaluable to individuals seeking to adopt a more sustainable and ethical lifestyle. Its importance cannot be overstated.

Primarily, tofu is a complete protein, meaning it contains all the essential amino acids that our bodies need to function properly. This is especially significant for vegans and vegetarians, as plant-based proteins often lack one or more of these essential amino acids. By incorporating tofu into their diets, individuals can ensure they are meeting their protein requirements without relying solely on highly processed plant-based proteins or making the meal planning overly complex. This makes tofu a valuable alternative for those who choose to follow a plant-based lifestyle.

Summarizing from above, tofu is an ingredient that can be prepared in countless ways, making it accessible and adaptable to various dietary preferences and cultural cuisines. It can be marinated, baked, grilled, stir-fried, or even used as a substitute for eggs and dairy in desserts. Its mild flavor allows it to absorb the flavors of other ingredients, making it an excellent canvas for a wide range of culinary creations. This versatility makes tofu an integral component of plant-based diets, as it adds texture, flavor, and nutritional value to meals. Sri Lankan spicy tofu curry just happens to be my favorite way to try tofu.

Moreover, tofu is not just a source of protein; it also provides essential nutrients that are vital for overall health and well-being. It is rich in calcium, iron, and magnesium, which are crucial for bone health, blood circulation, and muscle function. Additionally, tofu contains beneficial plant compounds, such as isoflavones, that have been linked to various health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Tofu is an invaluable and economical protein source in plant-based diets. Its ability to provide all essential amino acids, versatility in preparation, and rich nutritional profile make it an ideal choice for those seeking a sustainable and ethical lifestyle. Although the focus of this post is on how to cook spicy tofu curry, I feel shedding a light on the importance of food ingredients is as essential as the recipe of spicy tofu curry. The inclusion of tofu in plant-based diets supports personal health, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability, as well as adding an enticing variation to the menu.

This looks like a delicious recipe. Unfortunately, a lot of the ingredients are not readily available in the U.S.

Hi Bernadette, it is a challenge even I face whenever I make curry recipes. I couldn’t find any spice blends I was happy with and that’s one reason I started making my own custom spice blends and recipe kits. I would love to make a spice blend if you would like to try one 🙂 .
